Family during Thanksgiving 2022 dinner

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you might already have plans to drive back home and enjoy a delicious dinner with family and friends.

However, when the roads get crowded, accidents are bound to happen. According to national government data, Thanksgiving is the deadliest holiday to be driving with 2,414 deaths behind the wheel over the last five years. The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates 518 people may die on U.S. roads this year. “If this estimate holds true, Thanksgiving 2022 will experience the most deaths since 2007”, the agency says.

Speeding, distracted drivers, impaired driving, among other causes are what make this 4.25-day weekend such a dangerous time.

The holiday season is all about reunions, embraces and being around your family, so your safety on the road is a top priority now more than ever to keep the joyful spirit of these months.

Whether you’re driving in your own city or going on an interstate trip, remember to keep your car, your family and yourself protected during Thanksgiving with these handy tips from the experts at Auto TechGuard:

  • Do a maintenance check of your whole vehicle to make sure everything is alright

Check your vehicle’s engine, fluids, headlights, windshield wipers, brakes, turn signal, and tires. Also, always remember to keep an emergency roadside kit in your car.

  • Store your car-related documents in one place

Here’s a list of everything you should keep close: driver’s license, vehicle ownership and registration, car insurance documents and, of course, your extended vehicle protection plan from ATG.

  • Watch out for the weather

Stay tuned to your local weather forecast or Google Weather the days prior to the trip and on the day of. Rain, fog, snow and other weather conditions can require you to drive slower, so you’ll need to adjust your schedule accordingly.

  • Be flexible about your travel plans

Speaking of schedules, you might want to consider hitting the road before you anticipated if you truly want to avoid the rush hour. You can also explore alternate routes and stay clear of major highways, where most people will be. Trying out something new could be fun and convenient.

  • Buckle up and drive slow

Safety first! Always use your seatbelt and drive at a moderate speed that allows you to stay aware of your surroundings. Don’t drive above the speed limit and avoid tailgating. Instead, drive defensively and remember to signal before changing lanes or turning. It’s all in the details.

  • Stay the night if you need to

This one is a no-brainer, but it can never be stressed enough. If you’ve had one too many at dinner, feel tired or if the weather conditions are dire, stay where you are and make the drive back the next day. Many of the accidents that happen on the road during holidays are due to driving impaired. Keep yourself, your family and others safe.
