With the weather getting warmer, it’s the perfect time to ditch the winter tires and start working on your spring car maintenance.
After winter is over, you will probably start to notice the toll that road salt residues, mud, snow and ice took on your vehicle. That’s why spring cleaning your car is essential not only for its appearance, but for its overall performance and maintenance.
Keeping your car clean prevents rust, prolongs the life of the paint, and even improves your car’s resale value in the long run. Read ahead for ATG’s expert tips to greet the new season with a car that’s ready to go.
Start from the outside-in
Begin by washing the exterior of your car with car wash soap and a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to avoid any scratches. Rinse the car thoroughly, and dry it with a clean towel. Follow up with a good polish and don’t forget to pay extra attention to details like lights and windows.
Check your tires
After you’re done washing, always run an extra check on your tires to remove any stubborn dirt or salt buildup that might have accumulated and didn’t come out. Make sure they’re still in mint condition and, if weather allows it, say goodbye to them until the last months of the year.
Change windshield wipers
Experts recommend changing windshield wiper blades at least once a year. Spring is a great time to take this step, considering how harsh winter weather conditions can be on rubber.
Inspect under the hood
Gently clean any loose dirt on your engine using water. Then, wipe all components with a degreaser, followed by a quick rinse. To wrap it up, apply protective finishes to any plastic, rubber, or silicone parts after the engine is thoroughly dry.
Now go inside
It’s time to clean the interior of your car. Remove any trash or debris, and then vacuum the carpets, seats, and floor mats. Make sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, including under the seats and between the cushions. Use a microfiber cloth and a dashboard cleaner to wipe down the dashboard and console.
Clean the upholstery
If your car’s upholstery is fabric, use an upholstery cleaner to remove any stains or spills. If it’s leather, use a leather cleaner to keep it looking soft and supple.
Clean the carpets and floor mats
If your car’s carpets and floor mats are particularly dirty, you may want to give them a deep clean. Use a carpet cleaner and a scrub brush to remove any salt stains or spills. Rinse thoroughly and let dry before replacing them in your car.
Organize the trunk
There’s no need to keep coats, boots and other random winter items in there anymore. A new season means a fresh start.
The finishing touch: wax
Waxing your car has both aesthetic and practical purposes. Your car will look as good as new, while being protected from heat, UV sun rays, moisture, oxidation, and airborne contaminants. Do this at least twice a year to keep that fresh out of the dealership look.
